BARWE at Haverford

Since attending the Race Institute during the summer of 2018, it has been a goal of mine to contribute to starting a white educators caucus group at Haverford to discuss and process how white educators at Haverford understand our roles in teaching racial equity and inclusion. Following the reading of X. Kendi's How to be an Anti-Racist this summer, Mr. Ben White, who had just attended a Race Institute workshop with Ali Michaels approached me and Mr. Brendon Jobs about the possibility of starting just this kind of group. I had learned of BARWE the year before during SEED, and had planned at the time that if I was to help start a group of this kind, that I would consider using their template and resources. With the help of Mr. Ryan Meyer and Ms. Eve Schwartz, we invited educators across all divisions of Haverford to join us in monthly conversations where we discuss articles, reflect in small groups on our teaching practices at Haverford and consider ways that we can elevate the voices of our students of color in our community.
